ALOE VERA
I use Aloe Vera for sunburn but it’s not so great for dogs or cats.
Aloe contains anthraquinone glycosides that are purgatives. When ingested they can result in vomiting and diarrhoea.
TOMATO PLANT
There’s nothing better than growing your own veggies, tomatoes being one of my favourites.
The ripened fruit is considered to be OK but the green parts of the plant contain solanine which is toxic to both dogs and cats. However, a large amount needs to be ingested to result in severe poisoning.
PEACE LILY
My all time favourite plant BUT I can’t have them anymore, so no more peace in my home!
I learnt the hard way, the dog and cat had vomiting. The plant can also cause pain, drooling and loss of appetite.
ASPARAGUS FERN
Not a fan personally but some people I know love these ferns but they are toxic and can cause a whole lot of problems for your pets.
Keep your pets away or get rid of it!
DEVIL’S IVY
Says it all really.
Keep this one up high out of reach of your pets. If they ingest the plant you will notice signs immediately. Pawing at the face, foaming at the mouth and vomiting. It can also cause swelling in the mouth which will make it difficult to breath or swallow.
BIRD OF PARADISE
I’m not sure if I could fit one of these in my home but they are very ornamental and lovely to have.
They contain hydrogen cyanide and all parts of the plant are poisonous. It causes mild nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite and can cause death.
CYCLAMEN
These plants remind of visiting the grandparents when I was young … pots full of them.
It’s a beautiful houseplant that’s grown for ornamental purposes. It contains saponins and if its roots are ingested it can cause vomiting and diarrhea and possibly a visit to the vet.
